PENPALS for Handwriting
At Horsenden we use a handwriting program called Penpals which runs from Nursery through to Year 6.
The program focuses on 5 stages of handwriting:
- Physical preparation for handwriting
- Securing correct letter formation
- Beginning to join
- Securing the joins and practicing speed
- Developing a personal style
Handwriting is taught discreetly, with dedicated lessons where children from EYFS are modelled and taught how to form letters correctly. Lessons include whole-body and hand warm-up exercises, on-screen animations to demonstrate correct letter formations and joins, examples of handwriting for pupils to assess, and plenty of opportunities for practice. Many elements of the year-group spelling and grammar curriculum are also reinforced during these sessions.
Through the use of the Penpals practice and workbook, pupils are guided and have opportunities to practise their letter formation and joins. For pupils who require additional support, a separate handwriting intervention programme is used to ensure accelerated progress.
When learning to form and join letters, correct posture and grip is very important. To support this, we help children develop the muscles they need for writing through the Penpals Gym, which includes fun exercises to strengthen hands, arms, and shoulders.
