Topics weeks beginning 22nd January, 29th January and 5th February

Many apologies for the delay in uploading the topic for this week (22nd January). We are reading the story 'The Smartest Giant in Town', by Julia Donaldson (who is also the author of the 'Gruffalo' stories).

We are supporting the children to respond to questions involving 'who', 'what' and 'where'. For example, "Who does the giant help next?" "What does he give the mouse?" "Where is the fox sleeping?" We are using Makaton signs alongside these key words.

In addition to reading the story and focusing on these questions, we are talking about what George the giant does to be kind. We are thinking and talking abut our friendships within the Nursery and what we can do to be good friends. There are lots of opportunities to participate in games which require turn taking and sharing. We are learning some new dancing and ring games, which the children can then initiate spontaneously inside or outdoors. We have played, 'The Farmer's in his den', 'Ring-a-ring-a-roses', 'In and out the dusty bluebells' and 'Here we go round the mulberry bush', so far.

Over the next two weeks (weeks beginning 29th January and 5th February), we will be learning about two cultural events - Chinese New Year, and Shrove Tuesday/Pancake Day. Both of these events fall during the half term holiday, so we will be learning about them before they happen.

Chinese New Year will occur on Wednesday 14th February. It is a special time for people from China. This year, it will be 'The Year of the Dog'. We will be making a Dragon and Lion to take on a parade around the school.

Shrove Tuesday is a special day for Christians as they begin the season of Lent, leading up to the celebration of Easter. We will find out about traditions from around the world, and have a try at flipping some pancakes!

Please do not forget to make an appointment with your child's Key Person to discuss their time in the Nursery so far, and look at their 'Learning Journey' folder.
