At Horsenden Primary School, we use Read Write Inc (RWI) Phonics as our primary phonics programme.

RWI is a method of learning centred round letter sounds and phonics, and we use it to teach children to read and write.

The programme is a multi-sensory approach to learning phonics and ensures that the children are highly engaged in their learning.

The RWI phonics programme is used throughout Early Years Foundation Stage and Key Stage 1. The programme also benefits children older children in the school, who are new to English or need to catch up rapidly.

We like to engage parents/carers in the teaching of phonics via parent/carer workshops, support resources and website links.

When using RWI to read, the children will:

  • learn 44 sounds and the corresponding letter/ letter groups using simple picture prompts
  • learn to read words using ‘Fred Talk’
  • read ‘ditty books’ and story books featuring words they have learned to sound out

When using RWI to write, the children will:

  • learn to write the letters / letter groups which represent the 44 sounds
  • learn to write words by saying the sounds in ‘Fred Talk’
  • write simple sentences

Also, please see the attachment below for a complete list of the set 1, set 2 and set 3 phonic sounds and their actions. The RWI set 1-3 phonics sounds flashcards are available to buy from online sites such as amazon.
